America's First Ladies

Some wanted it, some hated it, and some hated to give it up.

Presented by People's University, Anna Kearney, and Bremen Public Library

Description: Only a few women have had the position of FLOTUS, First Lady of the United States, as the modern Secret Service calls her. Some, like Nellie Taft, pushed their husbands to become president because they wanted the position. Others, like Jackie Kennedy, thought the name was suitable for a race horse and passed her duties off to Lady Bird Johnson whenever she could. Still others, like Julia Grant, were furious when their husbands would not run for a third term and threw a hissy fit when forced to leave!
