ePub and PDF Books on Basic Android Devices

These instructions are applicable for basic Android devices that do not have Google Play. An example would be a Nook with a black and white display. With these devices, you may be able to read ePub and PDF books borrowed from the Indiana Digital Download Center (OverDrive). Note that some eReader devices have their own brand store for apps and may have an OverDrive app available. Please check your app store and/or the OverDrive help pages.

What you need

Checkout library books from OverDrive

  1. Go to Bremen Public Library's ebooks page on your computer.
  2. Click on the Overdrive graphic or the Indiana Digital Download Center link.
  3. When the Indiana Digital Download Center page appears, click on the “Sign In” link near the upper right corner of the page. Select Bremen Public Library from the list and enter your library card number with no spaces. Click the “Sign In” button when ready.
  4. You will see highlighted titles to choose from or you may search for a specific title using the search box (magnifying glass). Clicking the three horizontal lines will toggle (show or hide) a menu of categories to browse. The menu is normally displayed by default when you are using a computer.
  5. With the menu shown, you should be see choices for eBook Fiction and eBook Nonfiction. To browse books in either of those categories, click on a genre under the desired menu heading.
  6. When choosing a title, look at the top right corner of the book cover. You will notice a symbol of an open book (eBooks) or headphones (audiobooks). If the symbol is black, it means the book is available for check out. If the symbol is gray, it means the title is already checked out and you may put it on hold.
  7. You can narrow your search and browsing results to show only available ePub titles by applying filters. Click on “Show me... Available Now” to see only those available. Click on the “Format” button to see filters for ePub and PDF format. Click on the ePub link, if shown, to see only those titles available in ePub format.
  8. Once you find a title that you want, click on the book cover. A page for that book will open.
  9. If the title is available in ePub format, it will show ePub under Available Formats. You may also read books in PDF format.
  10. Your default lending period will be shown under the Borrow button. If you want to change the lending period for a book you are about to check out, you must do so before you check out the book. Go to your Account, Settings to change your lending period.
  11. Click on the Borrow button to check out the book.
  12. Click on the Download button. If prompted, select ePub Book or PDF, and then click on the Confirm & Download link.

USB Transfer from Computer to Reader

  1. Connect the eBook reader to your computer using the USB cable that came with the reader. Do this step before opening ADE. Otherwise, the application can't see it.
  2. Open ADE on your computer. Make sure you are in "Library" view.
  3. Your eBook reader should show up in ADE under "Devices."
  4. Click on an eBook then drag it over to your device.
