Kindle Keyboard and Paperwhite

OverDrive eBooks on the Kindle®

These instructions are for Amazon Kindles other than Kindle Fires. They include 1st and 2nd Generations, Keyboard, DX, Touch and Paperwhite. With these Kindles, you can read Kindle books borrowed from the Indiana Digital Download Center with your Bremen Public Library card.

What you need

Checkout library books

  1. Go to Bremen Public Library's ebooks page on your computer. www.bremen.lib.in.us/ebooks.htm
  2. Click on the Overdrive graphic or the Indiana Digital Download Center link.
  3. When the Indiana Digital Download Center page appears, click on the “Sign In” link near the upper right corner of the page. Select Bremen Public Library from the list and enter your library card number with no spaces. Click the “Sign In” button when ready.
  4. You will see highlighted titles to choose from or you may search for a specific title using the search box (magnifying glass). Clicking the three horizontal lines will toggle (show or hide) a menu of categories to browse. The menu is normally displayed by default when you are using a computer.
  5. Kindles (other than a Kindle Fire) are limited to Kindle eBooks. With the menu shown, you should be see choices for eBook Fiction and eBook Nonfiction. To browse books in either of those categories, click on a genre under the desired menu heading.
  6. When choosing a title, look at the top right corner of the book cover. You will notice a symbol of an open book (eBooks) or headphones (audiobooks). If the symbol is black, it means the book is available for check out. If the symbol is gray, it means the title is already checked out and you may put it on hold.
  7. You can narrow your search and browsing results to show only available Kindle titles by applying filters. Click on the “Show me only titles with copies available” to see only those available. Click on the “Format” button to see how many of the titles are available in Kindle format. Click on the Kindle link, if shown, to see only those titles available for Kindle.
  8. Once you find a title that you want, click on the book cover. A page for that book will open.
  9. If the title is available for Kindle, it will show Kindle Book under Available Formats.
  10. Your default lending period will be shown under the Borrow button. If you want to change the lending period for a book you are about to check out, you must do so before you check out the book.
  11. Click on the Borrow button to check out the book.
  12. Click on the Download button, select Kindle Book, and then click on the Confirm & Download link.

Download library books

  1. At this point, your browser will either open a new tab or a new window. Whether or not you are switched automatically to the new tab or new window is determined by your personal browser settings. If you are not automatically taken to an Amazon page showing the book you just checked out, you will need to find and click on the new tab or window which was opened to the Amazon page.
  2. If you DO NOT HAVE WIRELESS, do not be discouraged by the following Amazon warning “Digital library books require an active Wi-Fi connection for wireless delivery to a Kindle device. Library books will not be delivered via your Kindle's 3G connection”. You can transfer your borrowed library eBook to your Kindle using a USB cord if you do not have an active wireless connection.
  3. Click “Get Library Book”, which you will find on the right side of the Amazon screen. You will be required to sign in with your Amazon account.
  4. “Deliver To” should default to your Kindle if it is the only one registered to your account.

Wireless Delivery (if you have WiFi)

  1. Verify that the Deliver To option is set to your Kindle.
  2. Click “Continue”.
  3. You will get a message that your library book has been delivered to your Kindle.
  4. Go to “Menu” on your Kindle and select “Sync and Check for Items”.

USB Transfer from Computer to Kindle (if you do not have WiFi)

  1. Change the Deliver To option to “Transfer via Computer”
  2. Click “Continue”.
  3. You will then be prompted to choose which Kindle you plan to transfer your title to via USB.
  4. Verify that the Deliver To option is set to your Kindle.
  5. Click “Continue”.
  6. You will be prompted to open or save the file.
  7. Choose “Save”.
  8. This will save your book to the default downloads location on your computer.
  9. Connect your Kindle to your computer with the USB cord.
  10. Your Kindle will show up under “Computer” from your start menu. Copy the downloaded file to the “documents” folder of your Kindle by dragging the file. The book should now appear on the Home screen of your Kindle.

Tips and Help

Account icon Change Your Lending Period

  1. To change your default lending period, go to the Indiana Digital Download Center (steps 1 and 2 under Checkout library books).
  2. Click on the Account icon, which is a symbol for a person. You will be required to sign in if not already signed in.
  3. Click on Settings, set your desired default lending periods, and then click on the Save button.

Return a Book Early

  1. Your book will automatically expire and disappear when it is due. If you want to return it early, you will do that from Amazon.com.
  2. If you want to return the book early, go to Amazon.com.
  3. Click on “Shop All Departments”.
  4. Click on “Kindle”.
  5. Click on “Manage Your Kindle”.
  6. Sign in.
  7. Find the title of the book you want to return early and look to the right of that title. Click on “Actions”.
  8. Click on “Return this Book”.
  9. When it asks you if you are sure, Click on “Yes”.
  10. Click on “Actions” again.
  11. Click on “Delete from Library”.
  12. When it asks if you are sure, click on “Yes”.
